A letter from The Editor: Challenges for 2010

In: Companies

7 Jan 2010

I don’t think it is somehow indecorous to wish other people a Happy New Year after 6th of January. So that’s my wish to You, dear readers of TigerPrises.

The blog that I started one and a half year ago has now covered way over 100 Estonian start-ups and tech companies. Last month it had readers from 74 countries (TOP 6: Estonia, US, UK, Germany, Finland, India).

2010 will bring some interesting challenges and opportunities for me and my blog. The work of covering Estonian start-ups and tech market goes on definately, the improvement of the content, as well as appearance of the blog continues. There’s even a Grand Plan for longer period of time for this blog on the table. This will be developed further.

However, there are some evident needs.

1. I have always wondered if anyone really needs my blog. Yes, on the one hand about 500 people are visiting it every day, but on the other hand, there aren’t enough frequent visitors. Would you please give me feedback on this, by writing me an e-mail (toivo@ekspress.ee) or posting a comment  after this story.

2. I wonder if anyone want’s to join TigerPrises team – that’s me - as an Author or contributor? I never have enough time for the blog, it’s my hobby. Märt Ridala used to write with me, but he is too busy now with other things. Anyone interested to join me in this noble (and profitable) mission?

3. TigerPrises needs a new video camera for making higher quality video posts. I am talking about a 1000 Euro investment. I had this crazy idea to organise fundraising among readers, but would you be willing to contribute?

And last but not least, I’d like to thank the partners and advertisers of TigerPrises – Skype, Tartu Science Park, Estonian Development Fund, Connect Estonia, Invent Baltics, Linxacross and others. I wish them all success.

No comments – that means no one cares and I have waisted 1,5 years of my life for blogging :-)
Well, of course not, I did receive several e-mails yesterday evening.

Well done Toivo ! We have to bare in mind that Estonia is a little country what has not much industry. We haven’t got many good salesman either, so all we can really hope for is our e-startups and a bit of luck I guess. Not many people know about our nanotechnologies , shale industry , electric cars or semiconductors yet. So, our mission continues. Do not give it up mate !

Well done and congrats!

I’d love to help you with new posts, but to be honest I’m not the greatest journalist or blogger out there. However, I’m more than happy to make a donation towards the camera :)

I think you should definitely set up a fundraising page and with 500 daily visits you’ll have a camera in no time and we’ll have video podcasts soon!

Whehey and good luck!

Hi Toivo,

I often visit your site to see new ideas popping up from Estonia. I live in Finland and your site has been mentioned on http://www.arcticstartup.com and also on the NextWeb http://thenextweb.com/2008/11/07/11-great-resources-for-european-start-up-news/. I think closer link up with Arctic Startup would be a good idea. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!
After thinking about the camera issue, I decided to buy the Flip Cam (www.theflip.com) and turn this “boat” called Tigerprises a bit more towards podcasts.
